Wetalla Water Project
The Wetalla Water Project is part of an overall project that involves the progressive expansion of the existing New Acland Coal Mine and associated infrastructure to increase coal production from 4 million to 10 million tonnes per annum for the domestic and export markets. The mine is located 14 kilometres north-northwest of Oakey and 35 kilometres northwest of Toowoomba.
To satisfy the mine’s current and future water requirements the mine initiated the Wetalla Water Pipeline project. The Wetalla Water Pipeline project is the construction of a 45 kilometre underground pipeline to carry waste water from Toowoomba’s Wetalla Water Reclamation Facility to the mine site.
The project involves the installation of 45 kilometres of M-PVC pipe along with 45 kilometres of fibre optic cable, as well as a pumping station, reservoirs, SCADA telemetry and electrical switchboards. The scope of work includes the supply of all materials, which also involved obtaining assurances from relevant suppliers of the working life of their materials, as the Principal required a 43-year design life for the pipeline.
There are a number of road & rail bores required, as well as some minor creek crossings and a major creek crossing that will involve initiating strict environmental controls during the construction of the crossing to keep all disturbances to a minimum.
Work is progressing as planned for the pipeline which is due for completion in March 2009.
